The strongest reason to back the under is San Diego’s inconsistent offensive. The Padres enter the matchup near the bottom of MLB in batting average, on-base percentage, slugging percentage and OPS, while producing approximately 4.2 runs per game. Arizona has been slightly more productive at roughly 4.5 runs per game, but its overall offensive numbers remain closer to league average than elite. These are two lineups capable of occasional explosions, but neither consistently creates enough traffic and power to get over this posted total.

San Diego’s recent performance also highlights its volatility. The Padres were held to one hit through seven innings in Wednesday’s 10-4 loss, with all four runs coming after the game was effectively decided. That late rally makes the final score look more competitive than the offense actually performed for most of the night. A similar lack of sustained baserunners would put significant pressure on Arizona to carry the total by itself.

Walker Buehler’s 5.18 season ERA creates understandable concern, but his more recent results have been encouraging. In his two most recent starts, Buehler allowed four earned runs across 11 innings, equivalent to a 3.27 ERA over that span. Arizona rookie Kohl Drake is another source of uncertainty, but his limited major-league sample has included signs that he can provide competitive innings. Drake allowed one earned run over five innings with five strikeouts in his first listed start. Through his first nine major-league innings, he surrendered five earned runs. Against a Padres lineup carrying a low team OPS, Drake has a reasonable opportunity to navigate four or five innings without a major blowup.
