Los Angeles Angels vs San Francisco Giants (1:05pm)

The San Francisco Giants enter Sunday’s series finale with the momentum, matchup advantages, and hotter offense necessary to complete a sweep of the Los Angeles Angels. The biggest reason to favor San Francisco is the direction of the two teams. The Giants have won the first two games of the series, taking Friday’s opener 7–6 before dominating Saturday’s game 9–2. The Angels have now lost three consecutive games, while San Francisco appears to have rediscovered its confidence after a five-game losing streak.

Rafael Devers has been the driving force behind that turnaround. After entering the series in a prolonged slump, Devers has gone 5-for-8 with two home runs, seven RBIs, four runs and a walk against Angels pitching. Luis Arraez has also collected five hits through the first two games, giving the Giants consistent traffic on the bases ahead of their most dangerous hitters. San Francisco should also benefit from playing at Oracle Park, where its lineup has already demonstrated that it can manufacture runs as well as hit for power. On Saturday, the Giants scored nine runs in the opening four innings and received significant contributions from Devers, Arraez and Jung Hoo Lee. Lee homered, doubled and drove in three runs as the Giants produced 11 hits.

The pitching matchup is more competitive than the first two games, but it does not eliminate San Francisco’s advantage. The Angels will start Jose Soriano, who is 8–6 with a 3.43 ERA and 122 strikeouts. However, Soriano is winless in his last six starts and has gone 0–2 with a 3.91 ERA over his last four. The Giants will pressure him by extending at-bats, putting runners on base and forcing Los Angeles to use a bullpen that is already heavily taxed.

The Giants counter with left-hander Carson Whisenhunt, who is 2–0 with a 3.38 ERA entering his third major-league start of the season. His lack of experience creates some uncertainty, but it may also work in his favor because the Angels have never faced him. Whisenhunt does not need to dominate; he simply needs to keep the game close long enough for San Francisco’s hotter lineup to take control.

Simply, the Giants are playing with greater confidence, receiving production from the top and middle of their order, and facing an Angels team that has been unable to stop San Francisco’s offense throughout the series. Soriano may keep the score competitive early, but the Giants’ current form and home-field advantage should carry them to a much needed sweep of the series.
