Carolina Panthers vs Green Bay Packers (5:15pm)

I’m backing the Under 47.5 tonight because this matchup sets up better for a controlled, lower-possession game than a shootout.
The biggest reason starts with Green Bay’s defense against Bryce Young. Young has been pressured on 44.3% of his dropbacks when opponents rush four or fewer defenders, the highest rate among qualified quarterbacks, and 15 of his 17 sacks have come in those situations. That lines up perfectly with a Packers defense generating pressure on 38.5% of opponent dropbacks without blitzing, fourth-best in the NFL. Green Bay has also recorded seven of its nine interceptions without bringing extra pressure. That gives the Packers an opportunity to disrupt Young while keeping extra defenders in coverage.
Carolina's offensive-line situation makes that matchup even more difficult. Starting right tackle Taylor Moton is on injured reserve, while starting guard Damien Lewis has been ruled out. Carolina enters tonight with only seven healthy offensive linemen on the active roster.
The other side of the matchup also supports the Under. Green Bay averages only 20.6 points per game, ranking near the bottom third of the league, despite Jordan Love putting up strong passing numbers. The biggest issue has been finishing drives. Last week against Detroit, Green Bay reached the red zone four times and came away with only seven points, including two missed short field goals. The Packers enter tonight ranked near the bottom of the league in both third-down conversion rate and red-zone touchdown percentage. I also expect Green Bay to make a serious effort to establish the run. Carolina is allowing 153.2 rushing yards per game, worst in the NFL, and just surrendered 258 rushing yards to Tampa Bay. Josh Jacobs is back for Green Bay, and this is the obvious matchup for Matt LaFleur to try to get the Packers' running game going. A heavier rushing approach is exactly what we want with an Under.
The short turnaround is another huge factor. Both teams played Sunday and now have to come back four days later with significant injuries along their offensive lines. Thursday games often force offenses to simplify preparation and lean more heavily on familiar concepts rather than installing an aggressive game plan. Green Bay especially has reason to play patiently after scoring only 17 points against Detroit despite repeatedly moving into scoring territory.
Betting trends also support the Under, five of Green Bay's seven games have stayed under the posted total, Carolina is also 3-0 to the Under on the road this season. Last year's Panthers-Packers matchup at Lambeau finished just 16-13, another example of how this matchup can turn into a field-position game rather than a track meet. I see Green Bay's defense making Carolina work for long drives while the Packers attack Carolina's weak run defense and shorten the game. Unless turnovers repeatedly create short fields or Love hits several explosive touchdowns against Carolina's depleted secondary, I don't think either offense produces enough consistent scoring to get this game into the upper 40s.
