Baltimore Orioles vs Minnesota Twins (4:40pm)

I like Minnesota to take care of Baltimore at Target Field tonight. This is an important American League matchup, and I believe the Twins have more of an edge when you factor in home field, pitching depth, and Baltimore’s inconsistency away from Camden Yards. Minnesota has played its better baseball over the larger recent sample, going 17-13 over its last 30 games, while Baltimore entered this series with a losing road record.

One of the biggest reasons I’m comfortable backing Minnesota is the pitching staff. The Twins strengthened an already competitive staff at the deadline by adding A.J. Minter and Jeff Hoffman, giving them considerably more options in the middle and late innings. Minnesota was allowing only 3.93 runs per game entering last week, one of the better marks in baseball. In what I expect could be a relatively close game, that bullpen depth becomes extremely valuable.

Baltimore scored 10 runs yesterday against Texas, but I’m not overreacting to one offensive explosion. The Orioles had been dealing with offensive inconsistency before that breakout and still lost the series to Texas. Even Orioles-focused coverage described Sunday as their offense finally “waking up,” which tells you how unreliable this lineup has been on a game-to-game basis. They have also struggled in tight games, entering this matchup 8-15 in one-run contests, compared with Minnesota at 11-14. With two teams sitting near each other in the Wild Card race, I expect another competitive game where bullpen execution and late-inning situational baseball matter.

Minnesota’s offense also has enough firepower to create pressure throughout the lineup. The Twins were averaging 4.71 runs per game entering last week, ranking ninth in MLB at the time. I don’t need them to explode offensively here. If Minnesota can manufacture four or five runs, I trust its pitching and late-inning options more than Baltimore’s to protect the lead.
